Wyoming Valley Challenger Baseball at the Little League World Series

A few years ago the Wyoming Valley Challenger league finished a season with an end-of-year meeting and a short list of problems. No home field. Player numbers falling. Finances that did not look survivable.

In 2025 they played at the Little League World Series in South Williamsport.

What Challenger Baseball is

Challenger is Little League’s adaptive division, for players with physical and intellectual disabilities. The rules bend where they need to. The point is that the game gets played, not that it gets won.

The Wyoming Valley league covers Districts 16 and 31 and now runs around 130 players, up from the numbers that had the board worried. Games run twice a week through to August.

The field

The turnaround started with somewhere to play. The City of Wilkes-Barre granted a 25-year lease on a field for a dollar a year.

That single decision is why the rest of it was possible. A league without a home field spends its energy negotiating for space instead of running a season, and families stop committing when they cannot tell you where their kid is playing next week.

Volunteers do the actual work

The league is run by volunteers who meet year-round and then do the physical work of setting up and running games on top of it. That is worth stating plainly because it is the part that never makes the news. A season of adaptive baseball for 130 players does not organise itself.

Why we support it

J&J’s donates to Challenger, either money or memorabilia the league can auction to raise its own. Signed items work well for this, because a raffle prize that people actually want raises more than one they do not.
